Following on from “Ireland’s Great Houses”, it should also be worth noting the great ruins that can be seen around the Irish country side, if you are lucky enough to stumble across one. I found an interesting link which follows, showing magnificent images of these amazing houses as the ruins stand today.
Ireland's Great House Ruins
Not enough fame and publicity is given to Ireland’s great houses in comparison to that of the houses in the UK. This is being rectified slowly. Many books have been written and more are currently being compiled detailing the life of the Anglo Irish Aristocracy associated with these grand houses. Take a little time to get to know these houses with some current reads on the market:
- Voices from Great Houses by Jane O’Hea Keeffe & Maurice O’Keeffe
- In Ruins: The Once Great Houses of Ireland by Duncan McLaren
- Abandoned Mansions of Ireland Part I & II by Tarquin Blake
- Great Houses of Ireland by Hugh Montgomery-Massingberd
