A Swiss Cottage Delight!
By Ben Kesp
The Swiss Cottage or “Cottage Ornee” (Fantasy House) is certainly a delightful find only a short walk through the trees by the River Suir from Cahir Castle in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Located in a peaceful setting, the cottage was designed by John Nash, the famous Regency architect and no expense was spared in its construction, internal decor and furnishings. Its rooms are elegantly designed with the wallpaper being one of the finest Parisian produced. The thatched roof and external woodwork is a testament to its inspiration by nature.
It was built in 1810 for the 1st Earl of Glengall, Richard Butler and his wife, Emily, Lord and Lady Cahir, and used as a summer residence for his family but also where they could entertain guests and play at being peasants. It is said that no one actually ever spent a night there! Perhaps it did not pose the same safety as the Earl’s fortified Norman stronghold at Cahir Castle. Its interior reminds me somewhat of the Grand and Petit Trianon in Versailles, France with its ornate decor, including murals and expensive wallpaper.
The Swiss Cottage has been fully restored and is open to the public. Not only is the cottage a delight to see but also the idyllic lush grounds are perfect for a stroll. Next time you are passing by Cahir, ensure to stop by this wonderful delight nestled among the trees by the River Suir.
