The Garage Dog - Part 2

The Garage Dog
Part 2

The Steadmans had a dog too—a well-trained golden retriever. Their neighbors—the Nelsons—had a shepherd/hound mix. John and Lisa had pretty flowers in neat colorful beds in their front yard. Barbara and Ed had weeds, foot-high grass and oil pans in theirs. Lisa had complained to the Homeowners’ Association many times before about the state of their lawn. She had been worried about the property value of her own home being lowered. The Nelsons would always finally cut their grass, prodded as they were by the HOA president. But it would just grow back a few weeks later, looking worse than before. And Lisa was growing tired of her neighbors, disappointed by her situation. It had almost felt right, she had thought sadly, but the Nelsons next door kept it from living up to her ideal.

John and Lisa applied the tricks that they learned from The Pack Leader to their golden retriever. They even started to put him on their treadmill. The dog even knew that to enter the house he had to be invited, otherwise he would wait patiently and stare. Its disposition was calm and sweet. It loved to play fetch with Sarah in the backyard. It never ran and jumped on guests who came over to visit. Lisa and John enjoyed their dog, even bought it Christmas presents, saw it as part of their family. Moreover, they knew how to enjoy their dog’s company, and they had trained it to be a member of their pack.
